Supporting Your Child's Mental Health and Wellbeing

Growing up in the 21st century presents challenges to young people and at Nicholas Breakspear Catholic School we do all we can to support your child’s mental health and wellbeing.

If they are struggling with something that is affecting their mental health and wellbeing, we have put together a list of resources that you may find useful in helping to support them. Please see the bottom of the page with links to specific resources.

At NBS we want our students to flourish in all aspects of their lives, intellectually, morally, socially and emotionally. The School takes the wellbeing of our students very seriously, we believe that every child is a unique gift from God.

In our mission to build a better world we endeavor to ensure that every student has the support and guidance needed to overcome any challenges that they may face regarding their mental health. We strive to ensure that every student has the tools and support needed to help them to work towards maintaining a good level of mental healthiness. We take a whole school approach to wellbeing that encourages students to build emotional resilience, and helps them to understand the importance of looking after their own mental health, as they face the various challenges that modern life presents.

We understand that life is not always straightforward and so we also provide support that is tailored to each student, whenever the need arises. The first port of call for any concerns about wellbeing is the Form Tutor. Pastoral Support Co-ordinators can also be approached for help and they can make a referral to the relevant staff member/organisations who will help to secure the most appropriate support. In addition, our school counsellor provides a safe, confidential and non-judgmental space for students to talk about anything that may be worrying them. We can also refer to outside agencies and professionals that can help. Furthermore, we have a team of Student Wellbeing and Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, each of which wears a Diana Award badge to recognise the training they have completed in this area and make them more easily identifiable for students to talk to if needed.

In this wellbeing area you will find information pages on supporting your child’s mental health and wellbeing as well as quick links to external organisations which you can access for advice and guidance.

There is also a Mental Health and Wellbeing section in the Student section of the school website where students can access child centered support and guidance.

If you have any questions about any of the information or would like to talk to a member of staff about any worry or concern, please contact your child’s Form Tutor.
