Catenians Public Speaking Competition

Public Speaking is an art form. In today’s world the ability to confidently and clearly articulate your opinion is something that is used in the world of business, education and everyday life.

Aware that we need to equip and support our pupils mastering the craft of public speaking each year, Year 12 pupils are invited to enter the Catenians Public Speaking competition. This is organised in all areas of the UK by local Catenians in conjunction with local schools.

At Nicholas Breakspear Catholic school we invite our Year 12 pupils to research, write and deliver a four minute speech on a subject of their choice. Past subjects have included Feminism, Diversity and inclusivity and Time, why we waste it. The students are mentored through the process of speech writing and offered advice in the delivery of their speeches. This process enables pupils to develop their confidence, analytical skills and their ability to speak confidently in front of others.

The two strongest candidates are put through to the regional competition where they are marked on their appearance, delivery, oral skills and content. A winner and runner- up will be chosen by a select judging panel and will then go on to take part in the final in Manchester in September.
